Types of Mesothelioma ?

There are 3 types of Mesothelioma discussed here

Pericardial Mesothelioma

Pericardial Mesothelioma is a tumor that can occur at any age with a mean age of 46 years. Pericardial Mesothelioma surrounds the thin lining of tissue bordering the heart (pericardium). Thus, these tissues bordering the heart are caused by pericardial mesothelioma.

Symptoms of Pericardial Mesothelioma:

  • coughing
  • chest pain

Peritonial Mesothelioma

Peritoneal mesothelioma involves the abdominal cavity, encompassing the liver, spleen and the bowel. Pain is the most common symptom of peritoneal mesothelioma, just as in pleural mesothelioma.Furthermore, due to fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity area (ascites), the abdomen appears enlarged and big. The sufferer thus experiences:
  • vomiting
  • nausea
  • swelling of feet
  • fever
  • difficulty in moving bowels

Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma: a cancer of the cells that make up the pleura (linings around the outside of the lungs and inside of the ribs). Pleural mesothelioma spreads within the chest cavity, and sometimes involves the lungs. The onslaught of pleural mesothelioma is quite slow. The most common symptom of this is pain in the chest. The accumulation of fluid in the pleural space (pleural effusion), causes difficulty in breathing and complements the chest pain. Fever, weight loss and cough are typical of this symptom. The most valuable single test to show the extent of pleural mesothelioma is a computed chest tomograph (CT-scan).
